We’re Myakka. She’s Lisa and I’m Brad! Myakka is not a single-genre band, but a polymorphous group in continuous evolution. We strive to be authentic, eclectic, and sometimes electric, whether it is playing Bill Monroe, Grandpa Jones, John Prine, or Tim O'Brien. We like to think this makes us flexible, maybe a little quirky. On successive nights, we might end up playing traditional bluegrass tunes, Tony Rice and Norman Blake-style old-time and folk music, and some of our own tunes.
We don’t really see totally different styles of music, just different formats to sing about love and love lost, and other issues of life, whether it’s played on a banjo, dobro or Telecaster, as long as it has an edge. And a good beat. We have no problem playing Johnny Horton’s patriotic “Battle of New Orleans” in the same set with John Prine’s “Your flag decal won’t get you into heaven anymore.” We promise to play no Muzak or syrupy pop.
Now appearing…..
Myakka currently plays in local Sarasota/Bradenton coffee houses and restaurants, private parties, and Sarasota Folk Club shows at the Sailing Squadron the last Monday of every month.
